Project Overview

iDoc: Intermedia Documentation is invested in researching and archiving energy-related research ongoing at the University of Alberta in the 45+ research teams working on the Future Energy Systems project, in the context of other energy transition initiatives in the Edmonton area, the province of Alberta and across the country. Energy transition will create social transitions, the outcomes of which are currently being negotiated in the media landscape that reports on everything from climate justice activity to “business-as-usual” energy projects. iDoc amplifies voices not always prevalent in this mainstream media reports, nuancing perspectives to extend past “business-as-usual” rhetoric and understand how women, people of colour, Indigenous communities, and youth are and have been mobilizing on the ground at all levels. iDoc reports on the impacts that these voices are having on trajectories of energy transition and energy futures, asking how these voices and communities take up existing energy technologies, and those under development in FES.

This documentary and open-access archival project is iterative, and started with the capture of 104 filmed interviews and over 14 energy-related events. The iDoc project showcases the knowledge and stories of scientists, activists, artists, policy makers, and citizens, that are being sequentially edited and made available open access through the University of Alberta's digital Education and Research Archive (ERA) platform.  

iDoc officially launched at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Climate and Cities Conference (March 5-7, 2018). The open-access archive, to be launch in 2020, will be available through the University of Alberta Library in perpetuity.
