Dr. Laurel Wheeler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Alberta. She holds a PhD in economics from Duke University, an MSc in economics for development from the University of Oxford, and a BA in political science from the University of Florida. Her research agenda addresses issues of poverty and inequality in North America and in low-income countries. Dr. Wheeler's research focuses in particular on economic development within Indigenous communities. This includes research into how federal legislation, such as the legislation responsible for regulations in the energy sector, affects Indigenous economies and peoples.
