Project Overview
An ambitious 100% net-zero emissions target and growing proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) including wind, solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage are ushering Canadian utility companies through a major transformation in how electric grids are managed and operated. Given the rapid rise of DER assets in distribution systems, utility companies are increasingly relying on newer technologies such as advanced distribution management systems and, more recently, exploring the use of state-of-the-art DER management systems (DERMS). However, more research is needed to understand how utility companies can best capitalize on the advanced capabilities of these newer technologies, to optimize the management and control of DER assets in distribution systems.
The main objective of this project is to address key challenges being faced by distribution utility companies with regards to their grid modernization and grid transformation efforts, with a focus on advanced operation and management of DERs. In collaboration with the industry partner, a local distribution company, this project will tackle two inter-related research problems. The first aims to improve the management and control of DER assets in distribution systems by capitalizing on the advanced capabilities of nascent DERMS platforms. The second aims to optimize production of energy and water at grid-tied water treatment plants by exploiting nearby DER assets.
