Project Overview
This project conducts research on a multi-port modular multilevel converter (MMC) system that enables high-efficiency power transfer between multiple AC and DC grids, by leveraging a multi-frequency power conversion mechanism. Building on earlier work completed under FES-T06-P01, this project expands the range of applications for the multi-port MMC technology by developing (1) state-of-the-art grid-forming controls and (2) robust fault-tolerant controls for internal converter arm failure. Both of these are critical challenges that need to be addressed to help improve the resilience of future power grids. Validation studies will be conducted using real-time time-domain simulations with the aid of control hardware-in-the-loop testing.
