Project Overview
This project addresses a key environmental challenge associated with slow consolidation of oil sands tailings by developing waste-derived, bio-based surrogate materials for improved consolidation. Poultry feather (PF)- based materials will be synthesized by cost effective modification strategies to enhance their interactions with tailings and improve consolidation and water recovery. Performance will be evaluated for high solid content tailings by optimizing consolidant dosage and mixing rates. The structural, rheological, and environmental characteristics of PF-treated tailings will be assessed to ensure stable and environmentally responsible tailings management. Overall, the project delivers cross-theme benefits by valorizing feather waste into sustainable materials, supporting circular economy and ecological risk mitigation.
