Project Overview
This project focuses on developing a new technology to help refineries efficiently process biocrude oil (made from renewable sources like plants and waste) with traditional petroleum. While using biocrude helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it also causes serious corrosion issues in refinery equipment. Current methods to test for corrosion are slow and expensive.
We aim to create a four-electrode electrochemical (EC) dummy cell that quickly and cost-effectively measures how corrosive biocrude is, even when mixed with petroleum. This tool will make it easier for refineries to adopt biocrude and reduce their environmental impact. Supported by industry partners like Imperial Oil and Kemetco Research, the project combines advanced research with practical applications.
By 2026, we plan to develop a portable version of this tool, helping industries transition to cleaner energy while supporting Canada’s goals for sustainability and innovation in the energy sector.
