Project Overview
The municipal and industrial wastewater treatment industry faces many challenges including increasing energy costs, the presence of trace organic compounds in the water streams, finite resources, water conservation, and more stringent regulations. Moreover, economic, social, and political realities are responsible for driving the overall expansion and evolution of the treatment practices. Water reclamation, recycling, reuse, and resource recovery address these challenges by resolving water resource issues and creating new sources of high-quality water supplies. In addition, to meet their growing water supply needs, communities are considering other non-traditional sources of water such as agricultural return flows, concentrate streams, storm water, process water resulting from energy and mining industries, as well as the desalination of seawater and brackish water.
Taking into account these challenges, the main objective of this joint research is to develop effective and innovative low-energy treatment strategies for better managing municipal and industrial wastewater, for safe water reclamation and resource recovery. The purpose of this grant is to further advance the joint research collaboration leading to long-term collaboration.
