Dr. Mohamed Gamal El-Din is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. He is co-lead of the Future Energy Systems Theme on Resilient Reclaimed Land and Water Systems. Dr. Gamal El-Din’s Future Energy Systems research centers on developing passive and engineered semi-passive treatment and reclamation approaches for the safe release of treated process water into the receiving ecosystems with no negative impact on the environment or on public health. The research undertaken by Dr. Gamal El-Din is building the intellectual foundation for a new generation of process water treatment strategies that will provide decision-makers with the engineering and scientific evidence necessary to enable the sustainable development of the Canada’s energy systems.
Dr. Gamal El-Din has been actively investigating the fundamentals of advanced and innovative treatment approaches for water and wastewater (municipal and industrial such as oil and gas) in the last 20 years and has made significance achievements in this area. His research work has resulted in important advancements in the area of advanced oxidation and ozone treatment, membrane separation and biological processes. Another part of his research program has centered on the development of new innovate and green materials and their applications in water and wastewater treatment.
Dr. Gamal El-Din obtained a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the Cairo University, a M.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the Wayne State University and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Alberta. Since 2011, he holds an NSERC Senior Industrial Research Chair in Oil Sands Tailings Water Treatment. From 2010 to 2015, he was the Team Lead in the Helmholtz Alberta Initiative, Theme 5 on Sustainable Oil Sands Tailings Water Management: From Source to Discharge. Because of his contribution in teaching and research, in 2013 Dr. Gamal El-Din was awarded Killam Annual Professorship, University of Alberta. In 2017, he received the Alberta Science and Technology Leadership (ASTech) Foundation Award for Innovation in Oil Sands Research. Dr. Gamal El-Din’s research has resulted in more than 259 refereed journal papers and 369 conference and workshop presentations. One of the key objectives of Dr. Gamal El-Din’s research is to train highly qualified personnel with multidisciplinary expertise. This research studied, for the first time, the effect of activating tin oxide (SnO2) under simulated solar light for treating real oil sands process water (OSPW). The solar/SnO2 system effectively eliminated fluorophore organic contaminants, classical naphthenic acids (O2-NAs), and oxidized NAs (Oxy-NAs) from OSPW. The best experimental conditions to remove over 90 % of O2-NAs were found to be 0.5 g/L SnO2 under 8 h of irradiation. HO• and O2•– species identified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis played an important role in the degradation of NAs and other contaminants in real OSPW. The initial toxic effects of untreated OSPW were noticeably reduced after treatment, with a reduction of approximately 50 % in acute toxicity using Microtox® bioassay and over 80 % in the level of bioavailable hydrocarbons. In addition, the process also demonstrated a significant reduction in immunotoxicity as measured using an immune cell bioassay and reduced the toxic effects on Staphylococcus warneri using an adapted bacterial minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) viability assay.
