Three-dimensional simulations of two-phase plug flow in a microfluidic channelConference at CSME/CFD2024 at UofT, Abstract of the conference:
Fundamental understanding of a segmented Taylor flow of emulsions in a microchannel is essential due to its relevance in enhancing heat and mass exchanges in various technological applications, such as chemical reactors, drug delivery systems, and Carbon Capture and Sequestration technologies. We conduct numerical simulations to elucidate the flow fields of low-Capillary number (Ca ~ O(10-3 )) Taylor flow emulsions, whereby immiscible CO2 is carried by water in a microfluidic T-junction with a small depth. High-resolution two- and three-dimensional (2D, 3D) numerical simulations are performed using a finite volume approach and the volume of fluid (VOF) method. The simulations are first validated against various experimental data.
Our numerical results reveal the need for 3D simulations to accurately capture the dynamics of liquid and supercritical CO2 emulsions. By examining our 3D simulations, we unveil vortex patterns at multiple vertical planes within the emulsions, i.e., vortex patterns in the third dimension. The intense vortices, characterized by high vorticity magnitude, are located near the sidewalls. From Q-criterion analysis, the strongest vortices can occur across the microchannel (in the third dimension) and, hence, offer improved exchange mechanisms. Gaseous CO2 emulsions exhibit enhanced transverse mixing across the microchannel. These intense vortex patterns for the gaseous state emerge near the interfacial area of the emulsion body and the cap region due to the influence of the surrounding flow. At higher Capillary numbers, liquid and supercritical CO2 emulsions exhibit similar flow dynamics, but with prominent vortex patterns occurring in the upstream cap region. In terms of applications, these findings pinpoint specific areas within the emulsions to pay attention to enhance the stabilization or exchanging mechanisms for low-Capillary Taylor flow emulsions.T02-P05 University of Alberta | Activity | 2024-05-26 | |
